WHAT IS THE VA COMBINED RATINGS TABLE AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?

Many Veterans are surprised to learn that the Department of Veterans Affairs does not simply add individual disability percentages together. Instead, it applies a specific formula called the Combined Ratings Table, a system designed to measure how each additional service-connected condition affects your remaining “efficiency.” Understanding this table is essential if you want an accurate picture of your overall disability rating and the benefits you may be entitled to receive.

The Combined Ratings Table can be confusing at first glance, especially for Veterans managing multiple conditions. Rather than stacking percentages, the VA uses a step-by-step approach that calculates the impact of each condition in relation to your already-reduced capacity. This often results in a combined rating that’s lower than what many expect—making it crucial to understand how the process actually works.

How the Combined Ratings Table Works

Here is a simplified breakdown of the VA’s method:

  • Starts with your highest-rated condition: The VA begins by applying your highest percentage first to determine your remaining “efficient” percentage.

  • Applies additional conditions in descending order: Each next condition is applied to the remaining efficiency—not the original 100%.

  • Rounds to the nearest 10%: After all conditions are calculated, the VA rounds your final number up or down to the nearest ten.

  • Uses percentages, not simple addition: For example, 50% + 30% does not equal 80%. Using the table, it results in a 65% rating, which is then rounded to 70%.

Why This Matters for Your Benefits

Your combined rating determines your monthly compensation, access to additional benefits, and eligibility for programs such as healthcare, vocational rehabilitation, and certain housing or education benefits. Misunderstanding how your percentages add up could lead to missed opportunities or incorrect assumptions about your potential entitlement.

If you’re navigating multiple service-connected conditions, gaining clarity on how the Combined Ratings Table works can help you make more informed decisions regarding your claim or appeal. A better understanding means a stronger approach to securing the benefits you deserve.
